# Zeus v2: intervene on every turn

**Reviewed proposal, with v2.1 tuning; no images.** The commander is unchanged. The 99 now has **34 instants, zero sorceries, six creatures with native flash, two persistent global flash enablers, and Emergence Zone**. Only **Dovin’s Veto and Swan Song** remain as counterspells. All ten customs operate naturally at instant speed: seven instants and three flash creatures. This replaces the old mismatch between an opposing-turn commander and sorcery-speed combat payoffs.

The deck still tells Zeus’s rise through concealment, counsel, liberated allies, divine nourishment, the Titan war, and the settlement of divine authority. At the table that means keeping intervention mana available, hiding an endangered ally, preparing the right spell, suddenly deploying overwhelming reinforcements, and turning accumulated spell value into a finite airborne or Giant army. **Metis is a restrained ongoing draw engine.** Nectar is the spectacular immediate refill, while Titanomachy is the targeted reversal. Not every named myth needs a new triggered engine.

## Exact revised custom text

### Z01 — The Cyclopes' Thunderbolt {R}{W}

Instant · rare

> The Cyclopes' Thunderbolt deals 10 damage to target creature or planeswalker. If that permanent would die this turn, exile it instead.
> Draw a card.

Replaces a free counter with an exceptionally efficient paid battlefield answer. Damage can fail against protection or indestructible; the exile replacement denies resurrection after lethal damage.

### Z02 — The Titanomachy {2}{W}{W}{R}

Instant · mythic · **Signature**

> Exile up to two target creatures with power 4 or greater. For each creature exiled this way, create a 4/4 red Giant creature token.
> Exile The Titanomachy.

An instant targeted reversal, not a one-sided wrath. Zeus can choose two additional targets for the copy; both resolutions can matter. The exchange removes at most four creatures and supplies at most four Giants. Self-exile prevents recovery spells from repeating it.

### Z03 — Break the Adamantine Bonds {2}{W}{U}

Instant · rare

> Exile up to two target artifacts or enchantments. For each permanent exiled this way, its controller creates a 4/4 red Giant creature token.
> Draw a card.

Removes up to four engine permanents when copied, but leaves their controllers finite combat threats. Can sacrifice the value of your own spent rock for a Giant. All four Gods are enchantments and legal targets.

### Z04 — Rhea's Swaddled Stone {W}

Instant · rare

> Up to one target creature you control phases out. An opponent of your choice creates a 4/4 colorless Construct artifact creature token.
> Draw a card.

One-mana rescue that works against targeted abilities and untargeted sweepers as well as spells. The opponent receives a real 4/4, without defender. Can be cast with zero targets as a costly-to-the-board cantrip; copied with Zeus it can rescue two creatures but gives away two 4/4s. The copy retains the original’s target count. With a one-target original, change the copy to a second legal creature to protect two and give two gifts; if both target Zeus, the copy phases him out and the original fails entirely. A zero-target original produces a zero-target copy, two gifts, and two cantrips.

### Z05 — Brontes, Steropes, and Arges {1}{U}{R}

Legendary Creature — Cyclops — 3/4 · rare

> Flash
> The first instant or sorcery spell you cast each turn costs {2} less to cast.
> Whenever you cast your first instant or sorcery spell each turn, create a Treasure token.

Flash lets the forge deploy after holding up an answer. A 3/4 blocker is an immediate floor, while subsequent first spells supply a generic discount and a Treasure. Copies do not trigger it; Treasures arrive after paying for the original. Reduction cannot pay colored costs. No untap engine or repeatable spell-replay engine is present.

### Z06 — Nectar of the Deathless {2}{U}{R}

Instant · mythic · **Signature**

> Draw three cards. Create three Treasure tokens.
> Exile Nectar of the Deathless.

A four-mana emergency refill and mana reserve that is naturally instant speed and copied by Zeus. It depends on no creature mana value, creature count, or prior spell count. Each resolution creates three untapped Treasures, so the pilot can keep answering later opponents. Self-exile bars ordinary spell recovery. This is deliberately far above the efficiency of routine card draw.

### Z07 — Metis {2}{W}{U}

Legendary Creature — Nymph Advisor — 2/4 · mythic

> Flash
> Whenever you cast your first instant or sorcery spell each turn, draw a card.

A restrained ongoing engine: every turn’s first instant or sorcery draws one card. Flash permits deployment after holding up an answer. Copies are not casts; she does not trigger from her own cast. Four qualifying casts across a full round draw four cards, not eight selected cards. Nectar and Titanomachy retain the Zeus signature roles.

### Z08 — The Lots of the Cosmos {W}{U}{R}

Instant · rare

> Choose three. You may choose the same mode more than once —
> • Draw a card.
> • Create a Treasure token.
> • Create a 3/3 white Bird creature token with flying.
>
> Exile The Lots of the Cosmos.

Now three colored mana for an end-step allocation. The Cyclopes cannot reduce this all-colored cost; specialized Nectar owns the combined refill-and-mana role. The Bird mode remains a strong closing choice: three flyers alone, six with Zeus. A copy retains the modes chosen for the original. Self-exile prevents recovery loops.

### Z09 — The Hundred-Handed Ones {3}{R}{W}

Legendary Creature — Giant — 6/6 · rare

> Flash
> Reach
> When The Hundred-Handed Ones enters, it deals 6 damage divided as you choose among up to two target creatures and/or planeswalkers your opponents control.
> Whenever you cast your first instant or sorcery spell each turn, create a 4/4 red Giant creature token.

A five-mana flash 6/6 with immediate divided damage replaces the delayed attack payoff. Subsequent interventions recruit 4/4 allies; the army is generated by playing the deck, not by committing to attack before getting value. The damage is an enters ability, not a spell Zeus can copy. Each allocation must be at least 1; damage allocated to an illegal target is not reassigned. The token trigger is once per turn in practice because it requires the first instant/sorcery.

### Z10 — The Oath of Styx {1}{W}{U}

Instant · rare

> Choose an opponent. Until your next turn, whenever that player casts a spell, draw a card and create a 3/3 white Bird creature token with flying.
> Draw a card.
> Exile The Oath of Styx.

An instant vow with immediate cantrip floor, not an attack-count enchantment. It offers one opponent a finite choice: abstain from further spellcasting until your next turn, or strengthen Zeus’s hand and aerial force with every cast. The pilot chooses an opponent as each resolution happens, so Zeus can place two oaths on one opponent or cover two opponents. Spell copies are not casts. It restricts no legal action, charges no mana, has no recursion, and ends at the next turn.

## Existing-card changes

The v1 baseline and images remain untouched. These are **14 additional existing-card substitutions in the final 99**, separate from the original ten custom replacement mappings retained in the YAML. Land count stays 37.

| Out | In | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Ponder | Quick Study | Use unspent opposing-turn mana for a copied draw-two, rather than spending a main phase cantrip. |
| Preordain | Telling Time | Instant selection, with both resolutions useful; the top-card placement of the first affects the second. |
| Treasure Cruise | Chemister's Insight | Instant refill plus one finite jump-start reuse; no sorcery commitment or dependence on a stocked graveyard for the first cast. |
| Counterspell | Frantic Search | One finite instant untap/filter spell replaces a third counter. Copies can untap the same lands again if mana is floated between resolutions. |
| Arcane Denial | Pull from Tomorrow | Scalable instant refill, with X retained by the copy; discard happens on each resolution. |
| Blasphemous Act | Secure the Wastes | Turn the former general wrath slot into an instant army. X is copied; opponents still get normal opportunities to answer the tokens. |
| Sevinne's Reclamation | Snapcaster Mage | Flash body and one spell reused with flashback, rather than a sorcery permanent-recovery commitment. |
| Reconstruct History | Mission Briefing | Instant finite spell recovery, with surveil first. It does not waive the recovered spell’s mana cost. |
| Saheeli, Sublime Artificer | Leyline of Anticipation | Persistent permission to deploy Zeus or other engines after holding up interaction; free only in the opening hand. |
| Haughty Djinn | Benevolent Offering | Instant flying army and political compensation, replacing a sorcery-speed cost reducer. Do not casually give Athena three 4/4s. |
| Crackling Drake | Torrential Gearhulk | Flash 5/6 plus an immediate instant replay. Avoid the X spells as free-cast targets because X must be zero. |
| Elsha of the Infinite | High Fae Trickster | Native flash 4/2 flyer that grants flash to everything; no dependence on the top card of the library. |
| Reliquary Tower | Emergence Zone | A one-use way to deploy Zeus or other permanents at instant speed. Activation consumes this land and another mana source; price it honestly. |
| Flawless Maneuver | Boros Charm | Useful removal/finishing/protection modes. Protection copies are redundant, but the other modes can have different targets. |

## Counts and practical roles

The exact list is **99 = 37 lands + 34 instants + 15 creatures + 11 noncreature artifacts + 2 noncreature enchantments**. Torrential Gearhulk is counted with creatures, not twice. There are ten custom cards and 89 existing cards. Adding the unchanged Zeus gives 100. All quantities and existing color identities/Commander legalities were checked against the combined Oracle records.

Role counts below intentionally overlap:

- **Mana:** 37 lands, nine conventional rocks, the Cyclopes’ first-spell discount/Treasure, and Storm-Kiln Artist. Kykar can consume existing Spirits for red mana. Nectar and the Lots provide finite Treasure bursts; Frantic Search can reuse up to three lands per resolution. No repeatable untap engine or ritual-replay loop is included.
- **Native instant deployment:** 34 instants and six flash creatures (Cyclopes, Metis, Hundred-Handed Ones, Snapcaster, Gearhulk, High Fae Trickster). Shark Typhoon also has instant-speed cycling, but cycling is an ability and does not trigger Zeus. Leyline and Trickster grant permanent flash permission; Emergence Zone supplies it for one turn. There is no assumption that every nonland already has flash.
- **Cheap first casts:** ten instants can normally be cast for one printed mana using a suitable mode: Opt, Consider, Brainstorm, Swords, Path, Wear // Tear’s Tear half, March at X=0, Swan Song, Loran’s Escape, and Rhea. **March at X=0 is only a token answer and Swan Song requires a spell on the stack.** Secure the Wastes at X=0 is legally castable for W but produces nothing without payoffs, so it is deliberately excluded from the useful ten. The dependable no-target one-mana draw starters are Opt, Consider, and Brainstorm; Rhea is another only if giving away the 4/4 is acceptable.
- **Draw/selection:** eleven existing instants directly draw or select cards (Quick Study, Telling Time, Opt, Consider, Brainstorm, Impulse, Fact or Fiction, Chemister’s Insight, Dig Through Time, Frantic Search, Pull from Tomorrow). Metis and Wavebreak Hippocamp provide ongoing draw; Nectar, Lots, Oath, Thunderbolt, Bonds, Rhea, and Loran’s Escape supplement it in different ways. Loran’s Escape scries rather than draws. Frantic Search filters rather than gaining cards on its own.
- **Interaction:** eleven existing instants can directly remove a creature/permanent or counter a spell (Swords, Path, Gift, Wear // Tear, Chaos Warp, March, Veto, Swan Song, Abrade, Reality Shift, and Boros Charm against planeswalkers). Thunderbolt, Titanomachy, Bonds, and Hundred-Handed Ones add four custom removal sources. Rhea, Clever Concealment, Loran’s Escape, and Boros Charm cover protection. Soul-Guide Lantern and Unlicensed Hearse retain two graveyard interaction slots.
- **Wraths:** zero general sweepers. Titanomachy is capped at two targeted large creatures per resolution, four with Zeus. Hundred-Handed Ones divides six damage among at most two targets on entry, not on every spell. The list answers selected threats rather than repeatedly clearing everyone’s board.
- **Recovery:** Snapcaster, Mission Briefing, and Gearhulk reuse individual spells with exile safeguards; Chemister’s Insight jump-starts once. The four self-exiling custom instants (Titanomachy, Nectar, Lots, Oath) are normally unavailable to these effects. Recovery therefore cannot recycle the largest successful swings indefinitely.
- **Closing pressure:** six retained spell-to-token permanents (Young Pyromancer, Third Path Iconoclast, Monastery Mentor, Murmuring Mystic, Talrand, Kykar), plus Shark Typhoon, Hundred-Handed Ones, and instant armies from Lots, Titanomachy, Oath, Secure, and Offering. Balmor turns a broad army into a trample attack when ordinary instants are cast on your own turn; Boros Charm can give a large creature double strike. Repeated intervening spells do real battlefield work.

## Mana-priced turn cycles

These are illustrative legal states, not sampled draws or game results. They do not assume the same untapped lands can be spent again on each opponent’s turn.

**Commander deployment without an engine.** Begin your main phase with six untapped lands and three mana rocks producing nine usable mana, including enough W/U/R for Zeus and U/U/W left over. Pay six for Zeus, leaving two blue and one white available. On opponent A’s turn, cast Opt for U: Zeus draws one, then the copy and original each scry/draw. On opponent B’s turn, cast Swords for W at a real creature threat; choose a different legal creature for the copy if there is a second threat. On opponent C’s turn, cast Consider for U. The whole cycle spends exactly nine mana, casts three first instants on three different opposing turns, creates three copies and three Zeus draws, and uses no untap or Treasure assumptions. You have no remaining mana for another emergency. If no creature needs removal, preserve the white mana or use Rhea only if its gift is acceptable; the deck does not pretend Swords is an unconditional cantrip.

**Cyclopes sustain the next interventions.** Control the Cyclopes before casting Zeus, with eight untapped mana available. Cast Zeus for six and keep two mana, including U. On A’s turn Quick Study costs U after the two-generic reduction: spend one, then get one Treasure from the cast trigger. On B’s turn Impulse costs U: use one of the two remaining sources and get one Treasure. On C’s turn Fact or Fiction costs {1}{U}: use the two remaining sources and get one Treasure. Total actual spending after Zeus is four mana, funded by the original two plus two earlier Treasures; the third Treasure remains after C’s cast. Each new opposing turn resets the first-spell qualification. Zeus copies each original; the Cyclopes trigger only once for each cast. Fact or Fiction gives separately chosen piles on each resolution, not a guaranteed fixed card count. One removal spell aimed at the Cyclopes before A’s turn breaks this budget; choose cheaper instants or skip a turn instead.

**Metis requires a deployment window.** With Zeus already in play and seven available mana, hold up answers during A’s turn. If no answer is needed, flash in Metis at A’s end step for four, then cast Opt for U on that same turn. Metis was on the battlefield for Opt and draws one card; Zeus copies Opt and draws one. Two mana remain for B and C, allowing one one-mana instant on each if available. Across these three casts Metis draws three cards; she does not magically replenish mana. If an urgent answer consumes the four-mana reserve, do not deploy Metis that turn. High Fae Trickster or Leyline can instead enable a later end-step Zeus deployment, but their own mana and setup are additional, not free.

**Nectar supplies actual reserves.** With Zeus and four available mana, cast Nectar during A’s end step. Resolve the copy for three cards and three Treasures, then the original for the same, plus Zeus’s triggered draw. Six untapped Treasures are now real resources that can fund B and C’s spells. This is a signature burst; it cannot be replayed from the graveyard after its successful resolution. It does not promise an infinite stream of mana or treat drawn cards as free spells.

## Copy-versus-cast audit

- Zeus, Cyclopes, Metis, Hundred-Handed Ones, Wavebreak Hippocamp, Young Pyromancer, Iconoclast, Mentor, Mystic, Talrand, Kykar, Shark Typhoon, and Balmor care about **casts**. A Zeus copy does not cause a second trigger. On each qualifying original, Zeus makes one copy; that copy does not trigger Zeus again. Mentor’s prowess also triggers once per noncreature cast, not per copy.
- **Storm-Kiln Artist explicitly cares about casts or copies.** A first instant with Zeus produces two Artist Treasures: one for the original cast and one for the created copy. That distinction is intentional and is the exception to the preceding list. No repeatable casting engine is present.
- Counterspells are poor routine Zeus targets: if the copy counters the targeted spell, an original aimed at that same spell has no legal target. The two retained counters are emergency coverage, not the value plan. Choosing different targets can matter in a genuine stack fight.
- The Titanomachy and Bonds can choose separate targets for their copies. Rhea’s target count is fixed when casting and is copied. With one target, the copy can change to a second legal creature, but cannot change to zero targets. If both target the same creature, phasing it out with the copy invalidates the original and stops its gift and draw. A zero-target original has a zero-target copy; both give a Construct and draw a card. Protective indestructible copies do not stack usefully; mode flexibility or different targets is why Boros Charm remains.
- Copies of Lots retain the chosen modes, and copies of X spells retain X. Oath and Offering choose players **during resolution**, so each resolution makes independent choices. Fact or Fiction’s pile choices and Impulse’s selection happen separately each time.
- Frantic Search’s copy can untap lands, after which the pilot may float mana before the original resolves and untaps them again. Mana empties between steps/phases, so this is finite mana for that window, not reserves for all three opposing turns. Its filtering discards occur on both resolutions.
- Mission Briefing chooses a card after surveilling and only permits a paid cast that turn. Copies can select different cards. If Briefing is the first instant, its recovered spell is the second and receives no Zeus copy; flashing in Snapcaster or Gearhulk does not consume the first instant/sorcery qualification, so the recovered instant can receive it. Gearhulk’s free casting makes X zero for Pull/Secure/March; use a fixed-cost target instead.
- **Memory Deluge is intentionally absent:** its copy would have zero mana spent on it and would select no cards. Cycling Shark Typhoon and activating graveyard artifacts are also useful actions, but are not spell casts and receive no Zeus bonus.

## Rebuild and finite finish

**After a wipe**, retain lands, rocks, hand size, and any surviving Leyline or Shark Typhoon. Rebuild with a small token engine if available while reserving cheap interaction. Snapcaster can reuse an answer or draw spell; Gearhulk combines a 5/6 with one reused instant, and Hundred-Handed Ones combines a 6/6 with immediate divided damage. Rhea/Clever Concealment can preserve an existing creature engine through a wipe but may require spending the turn’s copying opportunity on protection. There is no permanent-recursion shortcut to guarantee Zeus every turn.

**Example closing attack:** at the end step immediately before your turn, cast Lots with three Bird modes and Zeus, creating six 3/3 flyers. Untap and attack on your turn: that is 18 flying power before existing creatures. With Balmor, cast two affordable instants before damage; each original cast gives +1/+0 and trample, so six Birds represent 30 power. Zeus copies only the first spell and those copies add no Balmor triggers. The defending player can counter the army spell/copy, remove Balmor, remove or block Birds, fog, phase, or wipe before combat. This is a developed battlefield attack, not a deterministic table kill. Existing Giants, Drakes, Spirits, Monks, Warriors, Sharks, and the god supply later attacks if the first does not win.

## Narrative and sources

The named episodes are grounded in [Hesiod’s *Theogony*](https://www.theoi.com/Text/HesiodTheogony.html) and [Apollodorus, *Library* 1](https://www.theoi.com/Text/Apollodorus1.html). The YAML carries exact episode references and explicit distinctions between attested events and gameplay adaptation. Rhea protects by substitution, Metis plans the next intervention, the Cyclopes prepare its means, nectar restores reserves, the Hundred-Handed Ones arrive with a volley, and the Titanomachy replaces particular ruling powers with allies. Lots allocate victory’s spoils. Oath represents temporary divine restraint; its Birds express Zeus’s authority, not literal children of Styx. Oath’s bargaining mechanism is the least literal adaptation and should receive focused narrative review.

## Review focus and limits

Cold review should challenge the power of Nectar funding later turns and Metis sustaining repeated interventions with one extra draw, the actual pressure from a spell-triggered Giant every turn, and Oath’s temporary incentive to withhold spells. These are deliberate advantages, but none should accidentally become a repeatable lock. The original four strongest custom instants exile themselves, spell recovery exiles its reused spells, and there is no repeatable blink/bounce, extra-turn, extra-combat, mass land destruction, or deterministic spell-damage finish package. Cross-deck stolen-creature interactions still need the whole-set reviewer. No actual multiplayer testing has occurred.
